"3 A.M. Eternal" was built around a sample of the Amen break running under a bassline that felt like it was coming through a wall from three floors below, with a vocal hook simple enough to follow on first listen and hard enough to shake for days afterward. Drummond and Cauty had spent the previous few years working out how much pressure a track could take before it collapsed, and this was the point where everything held: the rap sections, the gospel inflections, the siren, the sheer volume of the thing sitting against a lyric about trancentral and time being eternal, which should have been nonsense and somehow wasn't. It reached number one in eleven countries and sounded equally at home in an arena and at four in the morning in a room with the lights off.
