The Incredible String Band - Filmore West, San Francisco
The Incredible String Band formed in Glasgow in 1966 around Robin Williamson and Mike Heron, releasing their first album on Elektra. Their third record, The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, appeared in 1968 and received a five-star review from Rolling Stone; Joe Boyd produced their early work at Sound Techniques in London.
The band drew on North African, Indian, and Celtic instrumentation across a single performance, with Williamson playing oud, gimbri, and various whistles alongside conventional guitar. Bill Graham's Fillmore West booking placed them on a San Francisco circuit that also ran Miles Davis, the Grateful Dead, and Santana through the same rooms within the same months.
