Tribal America launched out of New York in the early nineties as house music was fracturing into subgenres and the major labels were still trying to work out what any of it meant commercially.
The sound was percussive, stripped back, built around drum patterns that drew on polyrhythmic traditions rather than the disco-derived four-to-the-floor that had anchored Chicago house. When Tribal America established its UK subsidiary, the label brought that same sensibility into the British club scene at the point when the circuit party and underground house worlds were developing their own identity distinct from the rave culture running parallel to it. The catalogue that Tribal United Kingdom put out between 1993 and 1996 has dated better than most of what surrounded it.
