Ralph Bakshi made Wizards in 1977 on a budget so constrained that when the money ran out he rotoscoped Nazi propaganda footage and kept going, setting a post-apocalyptic fairy tale about magic against fascism in a world still recovering from nuclear war. The film opened four months before Star Wars and found its audience not in cinemas but slowly, over years, passed along by recommendation.
