John Fahey - Starry Night, Portland
Fahey pressed his debut album, Blind Joe Death, himself in 1959 under the Takoma label he founded in a Washington DC suburb, initially distributing it through record stores as a purported field recording. He held a graduate degree in philosophy and folklore from UCLA and wrote his thesis on Charley Patton, whose approach to open tunings and rhythmic displacement shaped Fahey's own steel-string technique.
By the 1980s, his health and commercial standing had declined sharply; he was largely absent from performing until a late-career revival following reissues on Rykodisc in the early 1990s. The Starry Night venue in Portland was a mid-sized club that bridged folk, rock, and avant-garde touring acts.
