Nina Simone - The Kennedy Center, Washington DC, January 15, 1979

₹1,779.45

The Kennedy Center booking on Martin Luther King Day places Nina Simone in Washington DC at a moment when that date had only recently become a federal holiday.

Simone had been a central figure in the civil rights movement two decades earlier; "Mississippi Goddam," written after the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, was pressed as a single on Philips and returned to senders by radio stations in several Southern states.

Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina, she had trained as a classical pianist and applied to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia before beginning her career performing in Atlantic City clubs.
