Wanda

Barbara Loden wrote, directed, and starred in Wanda in 1970, shooting it on 16mm across Pennsylvania with a crew of six and a budget that required her to work without a script supervisor or a second take on most scenes.

The film follows a woman drifting through a landscape of bars, motels, and bad decisions, and it does so without judgment or redemption arc, which is part of what made it difficult for distributors to place and part of what has kept it in circulation ever since.

Loden won the International Critics Prize at Venice in 1971 and then largely disappeared from the conversation about American cinema until other filmmakers began citing it as a foundational influence. It remains the only feature film she directed.
