John Lee Hooker - Antone's, Austin

$32.16 NZD

John Lee Hooker was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1917 and moved to Detroit in 1943, recording "Boogie Chillen" for Modern Records in 1948, a track built around a single-chord boogie pattern that reached number one on the R&B chart.

Unlike most Chicago blues contemporaries, Hooker rarely used a standard 12-bar structure, instead anchoring songs to a drone and varying their length through repetition and feel.

Antone's, opened by Clifford Antone on Sixth Street in Austin in 1975, was the primary venue in Texas for booking original blues artists alongside younger players, and hosted Muddy Waters, Albert King, and Buddy Guy alongside Hooker during its first decade.
