A month after the Sex Pistols played their last show in San Francisco, Richard Branson flew John Lydon to Kingston with a suitcase of cash and a brief to sign talent for Virgin's new reggae imprint, Front Line. Don Letts and photographer Dennis Morris came along. Word spread through Kingston quickly and Big Youth was among the first to arrive, cassette player in hand. Branson asked Lydon for the verdict, Lydon said it was great, Big Youth asked for twenty grand, and Branson said fine. Lydon's reggae knowledge was not an affectation; he had grown up listening to it in the council flats of north London, and the musicians knew it. This photograph was taken on that trip.
