Grand Master Flash

Joseph Saddler developed his Quick Mix Theory, a technique for extending breakbeats by switching between two copies of the same record, in the South Bronx in the mid-1970s.

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five signed to Sugar Hill Records in 1980, releasing "Freedom" and "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" before "The Message," produced by Sylvia Robinson, reached number four on the Billboard R&B chart in 1982.

The Crash Crew, also on Sugar Hill, were contemporaries from Harlem. The Rocket and KNHC C89 co-presenting this Seattle date reflects hip-hop's expansion into Pacific Northwest college and commercial radio by the early 1980s.
