This Mortal Coil - Blood
Released in 1991 on 4AD, Blood marked the final chapter of Ivo Watts-Russell’s This Mortal Coil project. As with earlier releases, it functioned as a curated collective rather than a fixed band, drawing in a circle of guest vocalists including Alison Limerick, Louise Rutkowski, Deirdre and Louise Troost, and Caroline Crawley. Their performances carried the album’s hushed, devotional tone, balancing fragility with quiet intensity.
Like its predecessors, Blood leaned heavily into reinterpretation. The record includes striking cover versions of songs by Chris Bell, Tim Buckley, Big Star, and other outsider and cult songwriters, reframing them through minimal arrangements, restrained instrumentation and 4AD’s unmistakable atmosphere.
